Doherty
families in Guilford Co, NC middle to late 1700s and early 1800s
The
Charles Daugherty and Daniel Doherty families in Guilford County, North
Carolina do not appear to have any relationship or dealings with each other.
They both used the very common names William and John. Other than that the
names of the members of the two families do not reappear in both families as
would be expected in those time periods. The Charles Doherty family seems to
have drifted to Rockingham Co., NC while some of the Daniel Doherty family
moved south to Cabarrus Co., NC with some of the Christopher family members and
some west to Randolph County, Indiana. I do not know what happened to the
Cabarrus Co. Dohertys in later generations, but have
marriage information in Cabarrus Co.
Charles Doherty
Family
The
other Doherty/Daugherty family was Charles Daugherty who in 1787 received two
North Carolina land grants, one on the waters of Haw river adjoining Wm Kenedy, John Ross, Rachel Wilson, and Andrew Hall on the
Bell branch and Henry Brannock. The second grant was
on the waters of Barbecue, adjoining Robert and Thomas Scott’s corner, Charles
Bruce’s line on the west bank of Benajah, Jeremiah
Tindal and John O’Doneal. (G.D. 5:46, 47). In May
1786 Charles Dorherty was appointed overseer of the
road from widow Boyd’s to the county line (most likely Rockingham Co. line
since he lived in that area) on Deacon Fry’s Road. (May court
session 1786 Guilford Court). A John Dougherty of Guilford Co. bought
land from Joshua Coffee of Rockingham Co. in 1792. The land was on the waters
of the Haw River, both sides of Kenedy’s Creek,
adjoining the Rockingham line and Dougherty, Jeremiah Tendril, John Tomlinson
and Wright’s land. This most likely adjoined Charles Daugherty’s land. (G.D.

Family
Daniel
Doherty’s son William married Mary Christopher, the daughter of John
Christopher, a neighbor and fellow member of Buffalo Presbyterian church. From
DNA results this Christopher family was related to the Christopher families in
Pennsylvania.
Of the two
Doherty/Dougherty/Daugherty families in Guilford Co., NC in the late 1700s. One was located near the Haw River and Rockingham Co.
Border. The other, my family, Daniel Daugherty who bought
land on the waters of North Buffalo in 1782 adjoining Daniel Dillon and
Alexander Breden. Witnessed
by John Dougherty (G.D. 2:191). The waters of North Buffalo are just
north of Greensboro, NC. Daniel’s family were Scots-Irish meaning they were
Presbyterian and I believe they lived in Chester Co., PA where many of the Guilford Co. residents originated after coming
to America. I found a Daniel Doherty (the only Doherty, etc. by that given
name) on tax and other lists in Chester Co.
Buffalo Presbyterian church
records show Daniel’s wife as Elizabeth and their children were James, John,
William, Daniel, and Hannah.
- William Dougherty m. Mary “Polly” Christopher 6
Sept 1791, Daniel Dougherty, bondsman. William and Mary died about 1820
when Mary’s estate was probated. William’s last known where abouts was on the 1820 US Census for Davidson Co, TN.
He had bought land there in 1795 from Rockingham County residents Thomas Scott
and his wife Hannah It’s interesting to note that Charles Daugherty had a
neighbor named Thomas Scott. The land was actually located in Davidson
County, North Carolina (now Tennessee) and on the west fork of Spring
Creek. The deed was registered in
Guilford Co., NC.
This is our William. That is why he was on the 1820 US Census for Davidson
Co, TN. He probably went there to sell the land or check it out. He never
returned. Whether the family ever
went there is questionable. If they did they decided not to stay.
On a plat map from the
Guilford Genealogist[7] Daniel
and William were located in C5 and John and Charles and the Doherty Meeting house are all located in section B5 of Guilford County. I
don’t see any reason to believe Charles was related to niel.

John Doherty's neighbors Mary Goodner, William Montgomery, and Charles Canaday in 1790 appear to show him in the general vicinity of the Charles Daugherty land in the extreme northern portion of the county. Whether these two locations indicate two distinct and unrelated families, I don't know. The 1790 census showed 3 males over 16, 1 under 16 and 5 females in Guilford County, North Carolina. 1820 US Census, Guilford County, North Carolina: page 85. I believe this is the other Doherty family.
If John was connected with Charles, (there was probably more than one John) then so was Robert Dougherty, whose original Guilford County will was written 15 Feb 1804, and admitted to the court for probate the following May. It gives to Samuel Stewart land purchased from him (Samuel Stuart had married Rosana Daugherty.). It also mentions land in Wilson County, Tennessee, which was to be equally divided among William and Samuel Dougherty and Noble Covey (Noble Covey had married Mary Daugherty.). Robert's share in the land coming from his father's estate was to go to his brother Samuel after he died. Robert's mother Jean Dougherty was to have $100, his sister Susan Flack to have $60[1].
Daniel and Elisabeth had the following children[2]:
+ 2 M i. William DOHERTY was born about 1760 and died about 1821.
3 M ii. John DOHERTY was born about 1762. It does appear that Daniel, James and John Doherty left Guilford County before 1800. There was a John Doherty, who received a land grant on 20 Dec 1791 in Randolph County, North Carolina, 200 acres on Little River, adjacent Beeson[3].
4 M iii. Daniel DOHERTY was born about 1764. On the 1790 Census for Guilford County, North Carolina Dan Dougherty, 2 males over 16 (Daniel and one of his brothers), 0 males under 16 and 3 females (Hannah, Elizabeth, and his wife).
5 F iv. James DOHERTY was born about 1766. At August court 1782 it was noted that Sarah Carnaham gave birth to a base born child named James, who was also known by the surname Doherty and Carnaham. Base born James Carnahan (alias Doherty) was bound to Sarah Carnahan to age 21. James seems to have been the black sheep of the family his father left him a very small amount in his will. Sarah sued James Doherty in Guilford Court in August 1784 and won 50 pounds plus court costs. In August 1786 she was awarded 8 pounds, 8 shillings, 8 pence. I think the child, James, must have died young, I can find nothing more on him. I believe James, John, Daniel, and Hannah relocated to Cabarrus County, North Carolina. This might be one reason James left the county.

Second Generation
2. William DOHERTY (Daniel) was born about 1760. He died about 1820 in Guilford County, North Carolina. William married[4] Mary CHRISTOPHER, probably the daughter of John CHRISTOPHER, about 6 Sep 1791 in Guilford County. Dan Doherty gave bond and John Hamilton was the witness. Mary was born about 1761-1776. She died before 1821 in Guilford County. The 1820 census for Guilford County[5] shows 2 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45 and 1 person in agriculture (this was probably William, Jr.).
In 1796[6] William found the body of James Smith and turned it in.
At the 1822 February Court in Guilford County, North Carolina[7], William must have died around 1821-1822 because Zachariah Hodson was appointed guardian for James, Joseph and Mary Dougherty, a bond of 150 pounds each was made with William Hodson and Wm. Harvey giving securities. Their mother Mary may have died by this time.
The 1800 US Census for Guilford County, North Carolina, pg. 667 shows William with 2m under 10 (William, Jr. and ?), 1m 26-44 (William), 1f under 10 (Elizabeth), 1f 26-44 (Mary).
The 1810 US Census for Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina, pg. 976 shows William with 4m under 10, 1m 10-15, 2m 16-25, 1m 45 and over, 1f under 10, 1f 16-25, 1f 26-44, and 1f 45 and over. There are either children that died young or people enumerated that do not belong to this family.
It would seem that there should be more children for this family. They may have died young or perhaps all the children in the household were not theirs. There was a Thomas Dorty (sic), who married Priscella Blair on about 11 Sep 1822 (marriage bond date)[8] in Guilford. The bondsman was John Endsley, the witness was A. E. Hanner.
William and Mary had the following children[9]:

9 M iii. Joseph DOHERTY was born about 1805 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Joseph married Elenor Armfield 13 Mar 1828 Guilford County, North Carolina. Elenor was the daughter of Isaac Armfield.

Third Generation
7. Elizabeth DOHERTY (William, Daniel) was born on 21 Feb 1793 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She died in 1846 in Henry County, Iowa and was buried in Cedar Creek Friends Cemtery. Elizabeth “Betsy” married[10] Zachariah HODGSON, son of George HODGSON and Rachel OLDHAM, on 21 Feb 1811 in Guilford County. Zachariah was born[11] about 1790 in Guilford County. He died[12] in 1843 in Green Township, Wayne County, Indiana[13] Since Elizabeth died in Iowa only three years after her husband's death she probably went there with one of her children. Zachariah and Betsyprobably moved to Indiana about the same time Betsy’s brother, William, moved there, 1827.
On 5-18-1833 Zachariah was received by request with permission of Center MM, North Carolina after being disowned by them.
In 1841 Zachariah was disowned for drinking spirits
to excess[14].
On 18 Sep 1841 Elizabeth and children got a certificate to Salem MM, Iowa from Springfield MM, Wayne County, Indiana.
Betsy was the sister of William Doherty who married Mary Bennett, niece of Zachariah Hodgson. Other possible children are William born ca.1812, North Carolina, George b.24 Jul 1815, d.4 Jan 1882 Posey County, Indiana, Franklin born about1817, Mary b.6 Jul 1824, Indiana, and Elizabeth born about 1831 Indiana, (see Springfield MM, Wayne County, Indiana abstracted by Willard Heiss-Abstracts Of The Society Of Friends In Indiana published by Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis, 1970, found in most genealogical libraries). In1820 they had 4 male children and 1 female in their household[15]. In 1830 they had 4 male children and 2 female[16]. In 1840 they had 2 male children 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10 and 1 female 30-40. Some of the children had left home by this time[17].

8. William DOHERTY (William, Daniel) was born about 1798 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He died[18] about 1875 in Grant County, Indiana. William married[19] Mary "Polly" BENNETT, daughter of Matthew BENNETT[20] and Ruth HODGSON, about 23 Sep 1818 in Guilford County. Mary was born about 1802 in Guilford County. She died about 1868 in Randolph County. They are buried at Union Chapel Cemetery in Randolph County.
On
7 Nov 1837 William received a land patent in Randolph County, through the
Cincinnati, Ohio Bureau of Land Management Office. The description of the
property is "the South West quarter of the North East quarter of Section
one in Township eighteen of Range thirteen East of the second principal
Meridian Line in the District of lands subject to sale at Cincinnati, Ohio, (lying in Indiana)
containing forty acres and four hundredth of an acre[21].
William and Mary moved to Randolph County, Indiana probably by covered
wagon in 1827. They probably took the Daniel Boone trail through Kentucky. They
were farmers and Methodists. Elam, their son, became a Quaker.
According to Eva Davis
Thurston, William and Mary had 14 children but I have been unable to find all
of them so far, some probably died young. William died intestate and the
personal assets amounted to nothing at all and the debts of the estate amounted
to about $300 showing insufficiency of personal assets to pay these debts, but
he had a piece of land in the south west quarter of the north east quarter
section one township 18 range 13 east in Randolph County worth about $1000 that
was sold. According to the probate record the deceased left no widow but the
following children and heirs: Elam Dougherty, Mary Frazier, Elizabeth
Eddington, Bennett Dougherty, Samuel Dougherty, Susanah
Ward, Hannah J. Lorantz (Lawrence), Calvin Dougherty
all over the age of 21 and the heirs of Joseph Dougherty who are: John
Dougherty and Eber Dougherty who are over the age of 21, James A., Martha A.,
Mary R. and Amanda J. Doherty minors who are under 21. Hanah
died before the estate was settled and her two minor children Frank Doherty and
Grant Lieurance (Lawrence) are named. William in his life time mortgaged the Real
Estate to the State of Indiana and obtained a loan of $159.28 out of the county
school fund and that the mortgage was unsatisfied. The total amount received
for the sale of his property was $860.72 and debts paid amounted to $299.84
leaving $560.88 to be distributed to the heirs who received $62.32 each. Heirs of Joseph Dohertys;
Hanah Lieurance (Lawrence);
Admr, Elam Doherty; Mary Frazier; Elizabeth Edington;
Bennett Doherty; Susanah Ward; Samuel Doherty; and
Calvin Doherty, John Miller administrator. The guardian for the minor children
of Joseph and Hanah was T. F. Calgrone.

siblings and probably his mother living in the household. This is probably
shortly after his father’s death and shortly before his mother died.

1860 census: Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana shows
William age 61, born North Carolina, farmer, with real estate worth about
$1000, Mary age 56, born North Carolina,
Samuel age 21, Hannah age 18, Zachariah age 10 and Joshua Ward age 23 and Susanah Ward (their daughter) age 22 were also living in
the household.
The 1870 census lists William Dorhty[23]
age 71 as a farmer in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana and John Dorhty born in 1849 in Indiana, a farm laborer for Wm.
Scott. John was William's grandson, the son of Elam[24].
From the History of Randolph County, Indiana by E. Tucker:
"William Daugherty and wife, who were very old, are buried at Union
Chapel. He was a poor man with a large family, but was a hard worker, and
cleared up during his life vast tracts of land."
William and Mary had the following children[25]:

DOHERTY was born about 1823 in Guilford County, North Carolina. I am not
sure of Calvin's position in the family, but he is mentioned in his father's
will.

Guilford County, North Carolina. Probably died young[26].

DOHERTY was born about 1827 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Probably died young[27].
20 F vi. Mary Ann DOHERTY was born about 1831 in Randolph County, Indiana. She is listed as May Dougherty. She married Gideon Frazier 27 Sept 1851 by Ira Swain in Randolph County. I think I found them on the 1860 US Census for Blue Township, Jackson County Missouri[28] with the following children: Rebecca E. age 7; Andrew R. age 4; and Joseph M. age 2, all born in Indiana. I haven't been able to find them on any other censuses.

DOHERTY was born about 1833 in Randolph County, Indiana. She married Samuel
Edingten by James Nichols J.P. 11 Mar 1859 in
Randolph County.
+ 22 M viii. L. Bennett DOHERTY was born on 7 May 1834 and died in 1898.
23 F ix. Susannah DOHERTY was born about 1837 in Randolph County, Indiana. Susannah married Joshua L. Ward (b. abt 1836) 15 Dec 1857 in Randolph County. The 1860 US Census for Washington Township., Randolph County[29] shows Joshua L. Ward age 23, Susanah age 22 living in the same house as William and Mary Doherty. In 1880 they were living in Geneva, Van Buren County, Michigan next to her brother Samuel. Their were no children listed.

about 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana. Hanah
married Setan Lawrence 13 Aug 1863 by John Johnson
J.P. in Randolph County.
26 M xii. Zachariah
DOHERTY was born[31] about 1848 in Randolph County, Indiana. He died
between 1860 and 1876. Zachariah must have died before his father because he is not mentioned in
the probate record dated 7 May 1876[32].
11. Mary “Polly” Doherty (sic) (William, Daniel) born about 1806 married[33] Samuel HODSON on 18 May 1826 in Guilford County, North Carolina, her guardian Zachariah Hodson was the bondsman[34]. Samuel was born[35] about 1797 in North Carolina. He died on 18 Aug 1862 in Randolph County, Indiana and was buried in Cherry Grove Cemetery[36].
Samuel may have been the son of Joshua and Dorcas (Walker) Hodgin/Hodson of Guilford County. The family belonged to Center MM in Guilford. Most of the records for this Quaker meeting were destroyed in a fire. Joshua was the son of Joseph Hodgson b.ca.1740, who married 1st Margaret Williams 30 Sep 1760, 2nd Hannah Johnson about 1802, probably in Guilford County. Samuel had a sister, Margaret, who married David Vestal on 21 Nov 1821 at Center MM[37].
Samuel and Mary had the following children[38]:
27 F i. Dorcas HODSON was born about 1826 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Dorcas married Benjamin Hutchins.
28 F ii. Elizabeth HODSON was born about 1830 in Indiana.
29 M iii. Joshua HODSON was born about 1830 in Indiana. He died[39] in 1890 in Randolph County, Indiana and was buried in Union Cemetery. Joshua married Mary Horner 20 Nov 1852 in Randolph County. Mary was born in 1831 and died in 1906. They are buried at Union Cemetery, Randolph County. There are two infants also buried there, a son d.13 Mar 1860 and a daughter d.5 Oct 1867.
30 M iv. William HODSON was born about 1837 in Indiana. A William A. Hodson is buried at Cherry Grove Cemetery in Randolph County, Indiana, born 1837 died 17 Apr 1900.

Fourth Generation
15. Joseph DOHERTY
(William, William, Daniel) was born[41]
about 1819 in Guilford County, Indiana. He died before 1877 in Randolph County,
Indiana. Joseph married Rhoda KEMS on 8 Jan 1854 in Randolph County.
Rhoda was born[42] about
1835 in Ohio. I think Joseph was
probably the first child[43]
of William and Mary.
Joseph and Rhoda had the following children:
+ 32 M i. John W. DOHERTY was born in Nov 1854 in Indiana, he married Ella [-?-] about 1880. Ella was born about 1861 in Indiana. They were living in Jackson Township, Randolph County, Indiana in 1880[44]. John died between 1900 and 1910.
+ 33 M ii. Eber M. DOHERTY was born about 1857 and died about 13 Nov 1930.
34 F iii. Martha A. DOHERTY was born[45] about 1865 in Randolph County, Indiana. Martha called Mattie on the 1880 US Census for White River Township in Randolph County was a servant in the Henry Barnes household[46].
35 M iv. James A. DOHERTY was born[47] about 1868 in Randolph County, Indiana. Unable to find him after Oct 1877 when his grandfather’s estate was settled.
36 F v. Mary R. DOHERTY was born about 1871 in Randolph County, Indiana. She was in George Champ’s household, White River Township in 1880[48].
37 F vi. Amanda J. DOHERTY was born about 1873 in Randolph County, Indiana.
16. Elam DOHERTY
(William, William, Daniel) was born[49] on 21 Jan 1821 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He
died[50]
on 1 Dec 1891 in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana and was buried in Park
Cemetery in Fairmount, Indiana. Elam married[51]
1st Lydia CARR on 3 Nov 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana. Lydia
was born[52] about
1821 in North Carolina. She died before 10 Oct 1855 in Indiana[53].
Elam and Lydia had the following children[54]:
+ 46 F ix. Lydia Catherine DOHERTY was born about 1845.
47 F x. Jane DOHERTY was born about 1847 in Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. Jane probably died young. She was listed as M. J. P. on the 1850 US Census.
+ 48 M xi. John M. DOHERTY was born on 29 Jul 1849 and died on 11 Nov 1924.
Elam married 2nd Nancy Ellen WILSON[55], daughter of John W. WILSON and Mary “Polly” WINSLOW, on 9 Oct 1856 in Grant County, Indiana. Nancy was born at 10:00 pm on 15 Dec 1823 in Randolph County, North Carolina. She died on 2 Mar 1913 in Grant County and was buried[56] in Park Cemetery. Nancy was married 1st on 26 Aug 1843 to Harmon Lytle in Grant County. They had a son named Harmon born about 1844 in Grant County. She married 2nd Lewis Jones and they had a son named Calvin who was born about 1848.
Nancy was disowned by Back Creek MM for lying, etc. on 15 Jul 1841. This probably had something to do with having a child out of wedlock.
Nancy Ellen was a very strict
Quaker. In a note from Aunt Kathleen (Doherty, Crichton) Schacht she said: One
time when Grandma was visiting us, Cyrus and the family, Kathleen entered the
house after being out climbing trees with Lloyd and Ted (I must take after her
in that way, I was always climbing trees when I was young) Grandma said
"Oh Kathleen, thee has thy hair parted on the side like a boy" and
proceeded to part it in the middle as good Quakers did. Another time when
Pappy (Cyrus) took us to her grandmother’s large house where Uncle Arthur and his family lived in the country (this is where Cyrus was born, not in that house, but in a log cabin that has since been torn down) "Cyrus, thee must tell Kathleen and John there is no Santa Claus." I sobbed and howled uncontrollably, " Santa Claus is Dead." Pappy said: "For everyone who believes in him Santa Claus is Alive." From all the things I have heard about Cyrus, he was a very good father, but had a very difficult time after his wife, Ada, died. My father, Donald, must have learned from him.
Obituary, Marion Leader Tribune, 25 Feb 1913
"Fairmount, Ind., Feb. 24-Mrs. Nancy Doherty, 89 years of age died last night at the home of her son, Arthur B. Doherty, west of this city, following a short illness of pneumonia. Deceased was well known and one of the pioneer residents of this part of the county. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning from the Friends' church in this city, and interment will be made at Park Cemetery."
In the early 1850s Elam and his children moved from Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana to Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. Elam received a common school education and at the age of 17 began life for himself as a farm hand. The family were members of the Friends Church and prohibitionists in politics. He owned 80 acres of well improved land was one of the townships best citizens[57]. An interesting antidote I heard was that once Nancy Ellen, his wife, gave Elam five dollars to throw his pipe away, so he did and used the money to buy a new pipe. Their first house in Liberty Township was a log cabin where all the children were born. I have an old and current picture of the 2nd house on the same site, the address is 700 S 671 W in Liberty Township. (Arthur Fenee was living there in 1988). I also have a plat map for the county with his name listed, it was put out by the Fairmount Historical Society.
Elam's will[58] was dated 23 Nov 1888, probated Feb 1892.

Doherty; wife Nancy; Catharine Buller (daughter by 1st marriage), Allice Yider (unknown), John Doherty (son by 1st marriage, Eunice Whybrew (daughter) and Calvin Jones (stepson).
The 1850 US Census for Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana[59] shows Elam age 29, born North Carolina, Lydia age 29 born North Carolina, Lydia A. age 5, M.J.P. age 3, John M. age 1, all born in Indiana.
The 1860 US Census for Liberty Township., Grant County, Indiana[60] shows Elam Dougherty age 39, with real estate valued at $2500, Nancy age 36, Harman Lytle, age 16 (Nancy's son by her first marriage), Catherine "Lydia", age 15, Jane (Margaret) age 12, Calvin (Nancy's son by 2nd marriage to Lewis Jones) age 12, John age 10, Wm. Milton, age 2, and Margaret E. age 1. Catherine, Jane, and John were Elam's children by his first marriage.

22. L. Bennett DOHERTY[63] (William, William, Daniel) was born on 7 May 1834 in Randolph County, Indiana. He died in 1898 in Liberty Center, Warren County, Iowa. L. Bennett DOHERTY married Lydia Jane COLES on 18 Nov 1860. Lydia was born about 1836 in Ohio. She was the daughter of James Coles and Mary Pearson. James Coles ran an underground railroad in the basement of his house. He named the township Liberty because of his abolitionist beliefs[64].
The information on Bennett's family was sent to me by Kathy Scott of North Platte, Nebraska. Christian Neck Cemetery only has about 120 burials and 12 of them are direct ancestors of Kathy Scott. She says her family helped start the cemetery and have been tending the records since the beginning. She is the present holder of the original plat map drawn up in 1879, as well as the one that replaced it in the 1920's. That makes the cemetery very special to her. 24. Samuel DOHERTY[66] (William, William, Daniel) was born[67] in Nov 1838 in Randolph County, Indiana. Samuel married Nancy KARNS on 31 Aug 1865 by Jacob Eltzroth in Randolph County. Nancy was born[68] in Apr 1846 in Indiana. They were living in Geneva, Van Buren County, Michigan in 1880 next to Samuel's sister Susannah Ward.
Samuel may have served as a Pvt. in the Civil War from 6 Jun 1862-1 Sep 1862 (ancestry.com) from Randolph County Company F of the 55th Indiana Regiment Infantry[69]. The year of birth from the 1900 US Census is wrong, it says 1848.

32. John W. DOHERTY[74] (Joseph, William, William, Daniel) was born[75] in Nov 1854 in Randolph County, Indiana. He died about 30 Oct 1903 in Honton, Ohio, he was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Randolph County, Indiana. He married Emma LINDLEY about 1880. She was born[76] in Nov 1860 in Indiana. She died in 1933 and is also buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. She was the daughter of Zenas Lindley. Her sister Florence married John’s brother Eber. They were living in JacksonTownship[77]. Emma gave birth to seven children and five were living in 1900[78].
All of the family could read and write. John was a farmer, he rented his farm, but the census also said it was mortgaged so I'm not sure exactly what this means. Maybe he was renting to buy or renting additional land to farm.
Emma, Otto, and Leo are listed on the 1910 census, Emma only had three children still living.

"Union City Man's Fatal Fall.
Union City, Ind., Oct. 30, John Daugherty, 50, a member of a Big Four bridge gang was almost instantly killed today while employed on a new bridge at Honton, O.
While walking along the bridge he made a misstep and fell to the rocks, a distance of thirty feet below. His body was badly mangled and he died in ten minutes. The body was brought to Union City Thursday evening. The scene at the train when the body was met by the grief-stricken wife and five children was a sorrowful one and moved the crowd to tears.

She was the daughter of Zenas Lindley. Her sister Emma married Eber’s brother John. According to the 1910 US Census Florence had 8 children and 5 were living in 1910.

"FOUND DEAD NEAR HOME[85]
Eber Dougherty, 72, was found dead Friday Evening in the lane leading to the home of his son-in-law, Eugene Tobin, one half mile south of here.
Coroner Hinshaw, after an investigation, attributed the death to cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Doherty had been husking corn in a nearby field and was returning to his daughter's home when stricken. He was widely known in this community having been a carpenter for a number of years.
He leaves the widow, four daughters, and one son. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Fraze funeral home, the Rev. Mr. Jessup officiating. Burial was made in the Pleasant Hill cemetery."

She died[89] on 19 Nov 1908 in Fairmount, Grant County of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. and was buried[90] in Park Cemetery, Grant County. Eunice married Daniel WHYBREW on 17 Nov 1860 in Marion, Grant County. Daniel was born[91] on 2 Jan 1837 in Chapel Parrish, Essex County, England. He died[92] on 14 Sep 1907 in Grant County and was buried[93] at Park Cemetery in Fairmount. Daniel was a Quaker and the son of Joseph Whybrew and Phoebe Bull[94].
Eunice according to her death record was the daughter Elam Doherty and Nancy Wilson. She was born when they were quite young and both married other people before they married each other. The reason I asked for her death record was because Elam left her a bequest in his will and I wanted to know why he did that. I also was not sure if she was Nancy's sister as I originally had thought. 1850 US Census for Grant County, Indiana lists Eunice with the family of John W. and Mary Wilson.
The 1880 census shows Whybrew, Daniel age 43, farmer, born England, Eunice age 40, born Indiana, parents both born N.C. Lucy age 18; Morton age 16; William age 15; Cynthia age 13; Della age 12; John M. age 9; David age 6; Cora age 4; Oliver age 3 all born in Indiana[95].

She was the daughter of Riley Garner of Ohio and Ruth Haisley of Indiana. Rachel died when Maude Alice was a baby. Riley Garner (10 Jun 1835 - 23 Feb 1914) was the son of William Garner and Ann Hockett of Clinton County, Ohio. Ruth (b.12 Oct 1839, d.16 Jun 1910) was the daughter of Ira Haisley and Rebecca Overman. Riley and Ruth were married 2 Feb 1860. Ira Haisley (b.19 Nov 1815) was the was the son of Jesse Haisley and Ruth Kendall. Rebecca Overman (b.10 May 1819, d.18 Feb 1897) was the daughter of Jesse Overman and Keziah Stubbs. Ira and Rebecca were married 23 Mar 1837.
William was called Milton, he moved to Colorado after his wife died and was unmarried at the time of his father's death in 1892. He sold his inheritance (land) to his brother Arthur for $300[116]. William was an artist. He married[117] 2nd 20 Sep 1894, Weld County, County Franc H. Seely born about 1867. They did not have any children. William was a buttermaker in 1900, they rented a house in Greeley, Weld County[118]. He may have died between 1901 and 1920. In 1901 William was living at 1410 8th in Greeley.
William and Rachel had the following children:
83 F i. Maude Alice DOHERTY was born[119] on 22 Apr 1880 in Grant County, Indiana. After her mother died Maude was raised by her Garner grandmother. Maude married Joseph Davis (b.20 Oct 1878) the son of Nathan F. Davis and Hannah Beeson and nephew of Joseph and Mary Davis. They did not have any children and both died young after moving out west. Joseph had been in the Navy and not well after that. Nathan F. Davis (b.26 Dec 1853) was the son of George Davis (b.12 May 1818) and Charlotte Baldwin (b.11 May 1823, d.6 Dec 1882 buried at Oak Ridge). George Davis was the son of Joseph Davis and Catharine Farmer. Charlotte was the daughter of John and Charlotty Baldwin[120].
40. Margaret E. DOHERTY (Elam, William, William, Daniel) was born[121] on 17 Jan 1859 in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. She died[122] in 1938 in Grant County and was buried in Park Cemetery in Fairmount. Margaret married[123] William L. SWAIN in Mar 1878 in Grant County. William L. was born[124] on 29 Jun 1855. He died[125] in 1941
in Grant County and was buried at Park Cemetery. They belonged to Oak Ridge and Bethel Chapel MM.

41. Samuel Leonard DOHERTY (Elam, William, William, Daniel) was born[130] on 13 Jan 1861 in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. He died[131] on 22 Jul 1906 in Grant County and was buried in Park Cemetery. Samuel married Lydia E. SWAFFORD on 19 Oct 1885 in Grant County. Lydia was born on 27 May 1863 in Wabash County, Indiana. She died on 10 Dec 1914 in Grant County and was buried[132] in Park Cemetery. Lydia was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Swafford[133]. Samuel was said to have been a good artist by his family. He was sick a lot and probably died of TB as many did in those days. They were very active in the Society of Friends. Samuel died at the age of 45y 6m 9d.

Henry married[137] Mary Etta HAISLEY on 19 Jun 1887 in Back Creek, Grant County. Mary was born[138] on 21 Jul 1867 in Grant County. She died on 18 Jan 1927 in Grant County. They may have also had daughters Mable and Orpha Grace, who died 27 Nov 1918. Henry is buried in lot 215 at Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Indiana. Etta's parents were Elwood Haisley (1838-1897) and Milicent Rush (1838-1916) more can be found on them in the Abstracts of the Records of the Society of Friends in Indiana by Willard Heiss. Etta was the great granddaughter of Azel Rush.
Henry and Mary had the following children:
93 M i. Everett DOHERTY was born on 14 Oct 1889 in Grant County, Indiana. He died[139] on 28 Feb 1924 in Grant County and was buried at Park Cemetery in Fairmount, Indiana. Everett married Grace V. WINSLOW about 1913. Grace was born on 3 Oct 1888 in Rush County, Indiana. She died on 24 Mar 1980 in Grant County and was buried at Back Creek Cemetery Grant County.
After Everett's death Grace got her masters degree in English Literature, and taught high school and junior college in La Grange, Illinois, one of Chicago's western suburbs. She never remarried. Grace was the daughter of Charles S. Winslow and Ada Jane Bentley. 94 M ii. Dwight DOHERTY was born in Oct 1891 in Grant County, Indiana. He died[140] on 18 Jul 1959 in Grant County and was buried in Park Cemetery in Grant County. Dwight married Mabel F. DOYLE about 1912 in Grant County. Mabel was born on 26 Aug 1891. She died on 27 Nov 1975 in Grant County and is buried at Park Cemetery, lot 272. Dwight and Mabel may have also had a baby that died the day it was born, 5 Jul 1930.
Eva (Davis) Thurston
wrote that one time Dwight went out to the barn and brought a dead pig in and
chased her sister all over the house until she finally dashed in a bedroom and
locked the door. She also said he was a rather busy person always doing things.
I don't know what she meant by that. On 17 Jan 1917 the children were received
in membership at Fairmount MM. The Doyle farm bordered the Doherty farm on the
south about four miles west of Fairmount.
95 M iii. Wilson DOHERTY was born[141] on 24 Sep 1900 in Grant County, Indiana. He died[142] on 27 Dec 1926 in Grant County and was buried at Park Cemetery. Wilson married[143] Gladys Smith (Kilgore) 20 Nov 1923, and
they had a son named Richard and a daughter named Norma C. b.1925, d.1995, buried at Park Cemetery with her parents.
43. Nancy Ellen DOHERTY (Elam, William, William, Daniel) was born[144] on 21 Feb 1864 in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. She died[145] on 8 Apr 1901 in Grant County and was buried[146] at Park Cemetery in Fairmount, Indiana. Nancy married[147] Joseph E. DAVIS on 26 Mar 1885 in Grant County. Joseph was born[148] on 8 Dec 1862. He died[149] on 21 May 1930 in Grant County and was buried[150] at Mississinewa Cemetery, Grant County.
All the girls of this family were teachers except Eva. Nancy Ellen and Joe Davis lived with Grandpa George Davis for ten years after they were married. When Joe's sister, Elizabeth Ann (Davis) Scott, died Grandpa George took in her four boys. The boys were John, George, Oliver and Calvin Scott. John said he never heard Nancy complain. Eliza Ann was the wife of Calvin Scott. more can be found on them under the Oak Ridge Monthly
Meeting. Jennie was the daughter of John
and Mary Hathaway[153].
97 F ii. Eva DAVIS was born on 21 Jan 1893 in Grant County, Indiana. She died on 16 Feb 1990 in Florida. Eva married Robert THURSTON on 30 Jul 1911. Robert died on 30 May 1963. Eva was sick for many years. Her daughters took care of her in Florida. Eva had blue eyes, but her husband and daughters had brown eyes. Her residence at the time of her death was North Palm Beach, Florida[154].
98 F iii. Mary DAVIS was born79 on 30 Aug 1894 in Grant County, Indiana. She died80 on 19 Nov 1894 in Marion, Grant County and was buried in Marion, Grant County. Mary died as a baby of diphtheria. I don't think her burial place is right.
44. Cyrus Elam DOHERTY
(Elam, William, William, Daniel) was born[155] on 25 Sep 1866 in Liberty Township, Grant County,
Indiana. He died[156]
on 29 Jul 1922 in Marion, Grant County and is buried at Park Cemetery in
Fairmount, Indiana. Cyrus married[157]
Ada Lloyd on 25 Dec 1897 in Fairmount. Ada was born 30 Oct 1876 and died[158]
on 25 Apr 1910 in Fairmount. She was the daughter of William H. Lloyd and
Elizabeth V. Powers[159].
Cyrus and family were living on Hill Street in Fairmount in 1910. The house is no longer standing. He was a truck gardener and had hot houses where he raised vegetables for stores. Cyrus had an apple and cherry orchard and also grew flowers. He took things to the County Fair where there were harness races and balloon ascensions. Hazel Kepler, the niece of Ada wrote how much she liked Cyrus, she thought he was a very happy, witty person, very kind and a good uncle. Cyrus was very well liked with a sunny personality and was good looking. He was also a practical joker. One of the jokes he played on Ida, his sister-in-law, was to hide her fancy hat in the oven. Not knowing it was there someone started a fire in the stove and that was the end of the hat. He and Ida were never on good terms after that. This was before Ida married. Shortly after Ada's death Cyrus and five of the boys moved to Marion, Indiana and lived on the wrong side of the tracks according to Great Aunt Ida. His home and gardens in Fairmount had been mortgaged and he lost them.
Recollections:
One time kids were stealing watermelons and Lloyd and Ted caught them and brought them to their father who explained they were destroying young melons and cut a ripe one to put them in a good mood. In May 1910 he took the boys out in the yard to view Halley's Comet. This was shortly after Ada died.
From all the things I have heard about Cyrus, he was a very good father, but had a very difficult time after Ada died. My father, Donald, must have learned from him.

CYRUS DOHERTY CALLED BY DEATH
Well Known Former Fairmount Man Found Dead in Bed at His Home In Marion
Cyrus Doherty, well known in Fairmount, where he formerly lived, died at his home in Marion Saturday evening, Aug. 29. He was 56 years of age at the time of his death, which was probably caused by heart trouble. He was not feeling very well Saturday afternoon, but there was no indication of any thing of a serious nature when he went to his room to lie down. His housekeeper went out in the afternoon to do some shopping and when she returned found that death had claimed him. Mr. Doherty was preceded in death by his wife some years ago. He is survived by six sons and one daughter, Teddy Doherty and Kathleen Doherty who live in Wisconsin, an adopted son, Charles Blockinbacker (should be Kenneth Blackenbaker) of Muncie and Lloyd, Joe, John and Donald who live at home. He is the brother of Mrs. William Swaim of this place and Arthur Doherty who lives west of town. A half brother, John Doherty and a half sister, Catherine Buller living near Fairmount also survive him. The funeral will be held Tluesday morning at 10:30 from the Fairmount Friends church, the Rev. Mr. Shaw of Marion in charge assisted by Rev. S. Adelbert Wood. Burial will be made at Park Cemetery.
Ada my grandmother died of Tuberculosis when my father Donald was a baby. Ada graduated from Fairmount Academy, which was a Quaker school opened in 1885. She taught until she married. When Ada was real sick Eva Davis would come over to wash her and comb her hair, she said that Ada had the smile of an angel.

Fairmount, Ind., April 26-Ada L. wife of Cyrus Doherty, living on the west edge of town, died yesterday at her home following a lingering illness with pulmonary tuberculosis. She leaves a husband and seven children the oldest of which is eleven years old. Funeral services have not been definitely set but will be held sometime tomorrow. Deceased was a sister of Charles Lloyd, a well known teacher of the township schools.

Funeral of Mrs. Cyrus Doherty
The funeral of Mrs. Cyrus Doherty, who died Monday evening, was held Wednesday morning at the Friends Church. Mrs. Daisy Barr (Daisy Barr was a Quaker
Preacher and high up in the Ku Klux Klan, surprising as that might seem for a Quaker) in charge. Death was due to tuberculosis from which the deceased had suffered several months. Seven children and the husband survive. Mrs. Doherty was the sister of Charles Lloyd of this city and of Mrs. David Crighton, of Denver, Colorado.

99 M i. Arthur Lloyd DOHERTY was born[160] on 3 Feb 1899 in Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana. He died[161] on 21 May 1959 in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana and was buried at Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Logansport. Lloyd as Arthur was called was married twice 1st to Lucille Smith and they had a daughter who is now dead. 2nd to Ethel [-?-], who married ? Kurtz after Lloyd's death. Lloyd was a large man broad and about 5'10" and a bit blunt and acerbic until his later years. He left school after the eighth grade and worked most of his life for a food processing plant in Toledo, Ohio. He had an unusual mechanical skill, to the point of being quite inventive. While in Toledo he maintained the machinery for four large processing plants hopping from one to another. Lloyd was offered a large bonus to return there from his farm but he thought the hot steam in the plants affected his breathing. He mellowed considerably but he may have been a bit exacting earlier with those at the plants because he told John, his brother, that he needed to have more patience with people. Lloyd's widow was younger than him and may still be living on or near the farm they owned. Some two hundred acres of pastoral wood and not very fertile ground on the banks of the Wabash River near Peru, Indiana. This information is from his brother
John. Lloyd's death certificate shows he lived at RR4, Logansport and he died of Acute Left Ventricular Failure.

The body is at the Chase-Miller Funeral Home where friends may call after noon today. Final rites will be held at the chapel at 3 PM Saturday and burial will follow in Everest Memorial cemetery. 100 M ii. Theodore Elam DOHERTY was born on 12 Jun 1900 and died on 21 Aug 1964 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Theodore married Josephine Oetiker on 10 Feb 1925 in Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin. Josephine was born on 27 May 1904 in Switzerland the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Foellmi) Oetiker. Josephine's parents came to America on 6 Jun 1906 and lived in Sparta. She died on 24 Jan 1959 in Milwaukee. They are buried at Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, Block 3, Row 330.
Ted and his brother Donald were very close, he was about the only one Don would allow to pick him up when he was a baby. They traveled the country together until they settled down first in Monroe County, where they both married, then finally in Milwaukee. In 1930 Ted was living in Sparta[162].

L. SCHACHT on 7 Sep 1929 at her home in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin.
Franklin was born in 1899. He died in 1957 in Albany. He was cremated. Kathleen
was adopted by Ida, her mother's sister, and her husband David Crichton after
her mother's death. She grew up in Lancaster, Wisconsin and attended the
University of Wisconsin from 1926-1929. She was the Grant County Register in
Probate from 1923-1926.
Kathleen doesn't have a middle name because her father and Grandfather Lloyd wanted to name her Kathleen Dora after a lovely neighbor Dora Bogue (she used to comb her hair and tie ribbons in it). Her mother thought it a silly name and wouldn't do it.
Kathleen's Grandmother Doherty once seeing her come in the house after climbing trees with Lloyd and Ted said "Oh, Kathleen, thee has thy hair parted on the side like a boys" and proceeded to part it in the middle as a good Quaker should. Another time at her Uncle Arthur's house
Grandmother Doherty told Cyrus "thee must tell Kathleen and John there is no Santa Claus" Kathleen sobbed and howled uncontrollably "Santa Claus is dead" but her papa said "to everyone who believes in him Santa Claus is alive".
Kathleen loved to go to Tanglewood for the music when she lived in New York.
Franklin went to Beloit College where he got his BS, he got his MS at the University of Wisconsin and PHD in Bactriology at Wisconsin.
102 M iv. John Charles DOHERTY was born on 31 Oct 1904 in Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana. He died on 1 Oct 1993 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California and was buried on 5 Oct 1993 at Valley View Lawn Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield John May of Stockdale Baptist Church officiated.
John was honorably discharged from the Air Force 21 Dec 1945 and lived in Bakersfield, Calif. His wife is Betty Jo Stowers the daughter of Willis Edward Stowers and Maye Elva Stowers. Betty was born 1 Jan 1926 in Carter, Oklahoma, she died 11 Dec 1997 in Bakersfield, Calif. John and Betty were married 7 Aug 1961 in Bakersfield. He loved all animals and fed stray cats as did his brother Donald. John spent most of his time (1985) working in his large yard. Betty enjoyed her flowers and they had two miniature dash-hounds. Betty babysat for some neighborhood children.
This is a biography written by John. I roamed the country from 1924 to 1928, traveling until I'd run out of money and then I'd find what work I could until ready for the next journey. I intended to visit every state but never did. I settled here in 1929, and as the depression hit, I found work at the general hospital, menial work, more or less, as I began fifty-five years of adult education, night school and home study. This continues, my main interest now is comparative political economics, seeking the kind of information, most of it statistical, that transcends politics. In the family I may be an outcast as I usually vote moderates, usually Democratic. Except in history and general knowledge I have about as much education as you would get in the first year of college in math, French, English, etc. Much of this is home study where I believe I can handle most subjects, with a bit of patience. This must have worked because when a druggist friend, one of the two in the picture you will get, made an appointment for me to take a test at junior college here in Bakersfield in 1959, the report was returned from Stanford University that there was but one step higher that I could have attained. But a question regarding my masculinity appeared in the result of two young ladies I went with during the thirties, one of German origin, taught me to like classical music, and the other classical paintings. I went from the hospital drug room to the army and was near and in London for most of the war. After that I joined Lloyd with the intention of turning his two hundred acres of land into a fruit farm, but there was friction between his wife Ethel and me--I don't know her maiden name--caused by my clumsiness, and I worked for a dairy in Peru, Indiana. I worked in refrigerator cars alone, loading cases of condensed milk all day. It was at
this time that I learned that I might, for a short 120 pound man, have an unusual constitution, for I never went home tired. In 1952 my uncle in Lancaster, Wisconsin (David Crichton) had suffered a loss of mind, Alzheimer's disease, so that Aunt Ida, reporting to various newspapers, including one in Madison, couldn't get her typing and reports done, so I went up there for two years. My druggist friend, very close to where I now live, had sold me the lot on which I built this house when I returned here in 1954; late that year I took the test I told you about, and then got a real estate license and spent the next year selling new houses. Can you believe three bedrooms for $11,950 and 13,950. When I ran out of houses on the one tract, I saw a sign in the Singer Sewing Company window, salesman wanted, and I went to work there, outside sales and services. It was the sales total that you had to keep up. I liked this better than real estate because you were working with a lively group of people, welcomed into the best homes in the city, and made a lot of friends, doctors and judges even but mainly just working people like me. I worked there for fifteen years and now get good hospitalization or medical care to add to social security, and there is a small pension. I believe that in all my years here in Bakersfield not a single notable thing has ever happened to me, unless you would count my marriage. Nothing.
+ 103 M v. Joe William DOHERTY was born on 12 Sep 1906 and died on 11 Jun 1991 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa and was buried on 14 Jun 1991 in Masonic Cemetery, Polk County. Joe married Nia Myrta FAULKNER on 29 Jul 1944 in Wagner, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. Nia was born on 6 Nov 1912 in Winner, Tripp County, South Dakota. Her parents were Clay Cash Faulkner and Olive Almeda Jones. She died on 17 Feb 1994 in Des Moines and was buried died on 19 Feb 1994 in Masonic Cemetery. Her burial service took place at The Cathedral Church of Saint Paul in Des Moines.
Joe not Joseph was named after the family doctor, Dr. Joe Patterson. He left Marion, Indiana in 1925 to go to high school in Lancaster, Wisconsin. He graduated in 1928. He stayed at the home of a lady named Alice Stratton who owned Stratton's Flower & Gift Shop. After 14 years he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served four and a half years. He spent three years managing a flower shop in Oskaloosa, Iowa then bought his shop in Des Moines, which he sold to his son John in Feb. 1980 when he retired. In 1930 Joe was living in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin near his Aunt Ida[163].
+ 104 M vi. Donald H. DOHERTY was born[164] on 14 Oct 1907 and died on 26 May 1999 in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona from old age and was buried at
Phoenix Memorial in Phoenix. Donald married[165] Antoinette Frances on 29 Jun 1936 in Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin. Antoinette was born.
Donald's mother died when he was two and a half. His youngest brother Kenneth Howard was adopted by his mother's nurse Hazel Blankenbaker. His sister was adopted by his mother's sister Ida (Lloyd) Crichten. Donald's father died when he was fifteen and he lived with relatives for about two years then went to Texas to be with his brother John. They worked in Texas and traveled around a bit before he came to Wisconsin where he worked for the grandparents of his future wife. The 1930 US Census for Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana shows him living with his uncle Charlie Lloyd's family and working at the Rodi Factory[166] His brother Ted was also in the same area. They both married in Monroe County, Wisconsin. Donald had Tuberculosis when he was a baby and could not be adopted. He had some problems in school until they found out that he needed glasses. He was always sickly and almost died several times, his appendix burst when he was young and later the doctor didn't think he would live very long because he had hay fever and asthma so bad when he was in his twenty's. He was in a serious auto accident in 1959 when a women went through a red light and hit his car broadside. He was thrown from the car (this is before seatbelts were mandatory) and landed on his head. It took him quite a while to heal completely. It seems he got healthier as he got older. In his 70s and 80s he hiked everyday in the desert. He developed Alzheimer’s decease probably in his 70s and died in a nursing home.
Our address around 1944 was RR #2 Box 79, Hales Corners, Wisconsin (from a stamp album for purchase of United States War Savings Bonds. This is also the same address that is on Carolyn's birth certificate. The birth certificate says that Donald was a Machinist at Vilters Manufacturing Company.
Because of his health problems, allergies and industrial TB he was unable to do factory work, he worked in the shipyards during WWII in Milwaukee. The army wouldn't take him. He was a bellman at the Wisconsin Hotel for many years after which he moved to Denver, Colorado, but was unable to find steady work. Then Don and Toni ran the Phantom Ranch in the bottom of the Grand Canyon for several years. He then did security work in California and Las Vegas. When they retired they moved to Phoenix to be near Mary Jane. After having their house robbed they decided to leave Phoenix and moved to Bagdad a mining town in the desert and later to Congress another small town in the desert.
Dad and Mom left Milwaukee about 1961 after Carolyn graduated from high school, they went to Denver first, but Dad was unable to get much work. He was still having problem from his accident, he would pass out. After Denver they went to Florida for a few months then to California, then the Phantom Ranch, then to Las Vegas where they spent quite a few
years. After that they went to Phoenix to be near Janie, after someone broke into their house while they were home they decided to get out of Phoenix. They moved to Bagdad a copper mining town out in the desert, then to Congress, another small desert town; after mother died, Dad went to live first with Sam, then with Janie, and finally went to a nursing home.
Antoinette (Toni or Nettie) died of colon cancer. Most of her life worked as a waitress or cook. She liked people and always looked for the good in everyone. Toni grew up on a farm in La Crosse County, then the family moved to Tomah, which is in Monroe County when she was about sixteen years old. Toni was a Harvey Girl, she worked for Fred Harvey restaurants in Milwaukee, in the overhead restaurants on the Illinois Tollway and Phantom Ranch in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. She and Don were at Phantom Ranch from about 1964 to 1967. They received many thank you notes especially regarding the wonderful food that she made. There is also a letter from the owner praising them for the care of a reporter who was writing a story on the ranch for the National Geographic. I would like to see that article. While they were down there a movie was made, actually more than one, but this one was called Bridie, it was about a mule.
105 M vii. Kenneth Howard DOHERTY was born on 7 Jan 1910 in Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana. He died on 3 Jan 1992 in Zephyrhills, Pasco County, Florida[167] and was buried on 8 Jan 1992 in Chapel Hill Garden, Pasco County. Kenneth was adopted by his mothers nurse Hazel Blankenbaker and was seen on occasion by his brothers at various times.
On the 1920 census for Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.it shows: Charles Blankenbaker age 34, born in Kentucky; Hazel Blankenbaker age 32 born in Indiana; Kenneth Blankenbaker age 9; Mary Blankenbaker age 4; Ferrell Blankenbaker age 3; Harland Blankenbaker age 1, all born in Indiana. They lived on Wall Ave.
The 1930 US Census for Jay County, Indiana[168] lists the Charles and Hazel Blankenbaker family minus Kenneth. Kenneth was working in a Battery plant in Muncie, Indiana and living with the Jean C. Kerr Family[169].

"Kenneth Blankenbaker, of Zephyrhills, died January 3, 1992 at his home. He was 81. Born January 7, 1910, in Fairmont, Ind., he came to Zephyrhills 13 years ago from Michigan and was a retired salesman, a member of Valle Oaks Golf Club, Zephyrhills, Fla., a National Member of Smithsonian Associates and a member of the National Historic Preservation Foundation. Survivors include: his wife, Mary, of Zephyrhills; two daughters, Ida Leona Oglesby of Winter Springs, Fla., and Sandy Furnas of Eustisce, Fla.; one son, Charles of
Yorktown, Ind.; one stepson; two stepdaughters and eight grandchildren. Funeral Services were held January 8, 1992 at the
Oakley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard S. Davis officiating. Burial followed at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. Oakley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements."
45. Arthur Bennett DOHERTY (Elam, William, William, Daniel) was born[170] on 19 Mar 1868 in Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana. He died[171] on 15 Jan 1933 in Grant County and was buried[172] at Park Cemetery in Fairmount, Indiana. Arthur married[173] Eva HAISLEY on 28 Jun 1889 in Grant County. Eva was born[174] on 22 May 1872 in Grant County. She died[175] on 23 Nov 1964 in Grant County and is buried[176] at Park Cemetery. Arthur lived with his mother after his father died. He stayed on the farm until according to my father, Donald H. Doherty, he was conned into mortgaging it and buying oil stock; he lost everything.
Eva was the daughter of Jessie Haisley and Keziah Howell. Jessie (b.7 Aug 1842 Wayne County, Indiana, d.11 Jan 1928 Fairmount) was the son of Ira Haisley (1815-1888). Ira married Keziah 13 Apr 1867, she was born 7 Oct 1850, died 16 Mar 1866. She was a member of Oakridge MM, and the daughter of Rebecca Overman[177].

106 M i. Jessie Elam DOHERTY was born on 23 Apr 1892 in Grant County, Indiana. He died[179] on 23 Nov 1940 in Grant County and was buried at Park Cemetery. Jessie Elam married[180] Maude Blanche Gunder 31 Jan 1915 Grant County.
107 F ii. Cleo Coraine DOHERTY was born on 14 Sep 1895 in Grant County, Indiana. Cleo married Cletis Brown, a Baptist minister.
108 F iii. Mabelle Marie DOHERTY was born on 6 Mar 1899 in Grant County, Indiana. She died104 on 1 Jul 1992 in Issaquah, Washington. Mabelle married Frank Allred. Mabel was a nurse and took care of Nancy Ellen and Eva before they died. She also spent many years caring for her invalid husband until he died. She was a lovely lady and she was still living in the family house in 1991 although she had sold the farm to a young family. They let her stay on in her house. The last time I saw her, 1989 she showed me Nancy Ellen (Wilson) Doherty's bible and many family pictures. Mabel moved to Issaquah, Washington State to live with her son, until her death.

110 F v. Florence Ella DOHERTY was born on 31 Mar 1907 in Grant County, Indiana. She died on 18 Mar 1978. Florence married Hugh Henderson 12 May 1925.

He died[184] on 11 Nov 1924 in Grant County, Indiana and was buried[185] at Park Cemetery, Grant County. John married[186] Mary R. DAVIS on 25 Mar 1871 in Grant County. Mary was born[187] on 3 May 1848 in Indiana. She died[188] on 12 Mar 1912 in Grant County and was buried[189] in Park Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana. Of John's children it seems that Cora Alice was the only one who lived past childhood. The 1900 census[190] shows Mary had five children and only one was living in 1900. John and Mary were members of the Bethel MM in 1899.
The 1870 US Census for Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana[191] shows John age 21, Laborer, born in Indiana living near his grandfather, William Dorhty (sic). John was a farm laborer for Wm. Scott, he was the son of Elam. Mary's parents were George
Davis of Ohio and Charlotte Baldwin of Guilford County, North Carolina. Mary was the sister of Joseph Davis[192].

She died[214] on 20 Aug 1922 in Grant County and was buried died[215] at Park Cemetery in Grant County. Cora married[216] Micajah Tillman COX, son of John William COX and Elisabeth WILSON, on 23 Apr 1891 in Grant County. Micajah was born[217] on 17 Jun 1869 in Fairmount, Indiana. He died in Aug 1953 in Fairmount and was buried[218] at Park Cemetery in Fairmount. Micajah used his middle name, Tilman. He and Cora were members of Bethel MM in 1895. Micajah had a twin sister named Margaret.
Elisabeth Wilson, Cora's mother-in-law, was the sister of Cora Alice's step grandmother Nancy Ellen Wilson. Cora taught in Little Ridge School as an assistant to Ancil Ratliff in 1889[219].

Bernard was unusually bright, much quicker to learn than most. He had a good outlook on life. He took time to go see people. Each day he looked for something pretty, did a good deed and memorized a few lines he thought were good. He and his family lived in Whittier, California.
